ARTICLE ABOUT VOLLEYBALL

The next World Volleyball Championship for men will be held in Russia, and our athletes are simply obliged to show decent results there. Since the game of volleyball, originally called “mintonette”, was invented in 1895 by William Morgan, just 4 years after the creation of basketball, more than a century has passed. Morgan, a graduate of YMCA Springfield College, developed the game as a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball, and in 1949 the first World Cup was held in Czechoslovakia, by the way, the Soviet Union won gold. You can leave a request for timely purchase of tickets to the European Volleyball Championship without overpayments right now.

The history of the World Volleyball Championships is being written now …

The World Volleyball Championship for men is an international competition in which senior men’s teams of members of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the world’s governing body of sports, take part. The starting gap in the frequency between the championships was variable, but since 1962 they have been held every four years. The current champion is Poland, which won its third title in the 2018 tournament.

The current format of the competition includes the qualification phase, which is currently underway during the previous three years. It is needed to determine which teams claim to be in the tournament stage, which is often called the World Cup finals. 24 teams, including the automatically determined host country (ies), compete at the stage of the tournament for the title in places prepared by the host country (ies) for a month.

19 world championships were won by seven different national teams. Russia (as part of the Soviet Union) won six times, and it is the only team that played in every tournament. Other winners of the World Cup – Brazil, Italy and Poland, won three titles each; Czech Republic as (Czechoslovakia) with two titles; both Germany (East Germany) and the United States, with one title.

Since volleyball was to be included in the Olympic program in 1964, 4 cycles were improved 2 years after the fourth draw (1960), so that the World Cup can alternate with the Summer Olympic Games. Since 1970, teams from Africa have also taken part in the competition, and the original goal of participating in the games of all five continental confederations has been achieved.

The number of teams participating in games has changed significantly over the years. After the growing popularity of volleyball, they steadily grew to 20 in the 1970s and partly in the 1980s, then were reduced to 16 in the 1990s and finally organized in 24 after 2002.

Until 1974, the host country of the tournament organized both men’s and women’s competitions, with the exception of the games of 1966/1967, which took place in different years. Since 1978, this practice has been observed only occasionally, for example, in 1998 and in the 2006 tournament, which was held in Japan.

Champions

The history of the World Cup clearly demonstrates that European nations initially dominated volleyball.

The first two tournaments were won by the Soviet Union. In 1956, Czechoslovakia won the gold medal twice. Then two more victories followed for the Soviet Union, in both cases over Czechoslovakia. Czechs won the gold medal in the 1966 competition.

In 1970, East Germany defeated Bulgaria in the battle for its first and only title. In 1974, the Soviet Union threatened to take gold again, but was eventually defeated by Poland. However, they confirmed their leadership by winning a third time, two consecutive tournament draws.

Italy completely dominated the tournaments of the 90s, winning all the draws that took place in this decade (1990, 1994, 1998), led by players such as Lorenzo Bernardi and Andrea Giani.

In the 2000s, Brazil became the leading force in this sport, winning three World Cups in a row (2002, 2006 and 2010), the first of which in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the same stage when the Brazilians were in second place in 1982 . 2014, Poland, playing at home, defeated Brazil in 4 sets in the finals, winning the second gold medal and giving them the fourth historical title in a row.

As of 2014, 18 draws were held for the men’s world volleyball championship: 14 times the cup was won by European teams and four by the American (three times Brazil and once the United States).
