Volleyball Injuries

The other side of the sport is volleyball injuries
Injuries in volleyball are not so common compared to other team games, such as football or hockey. This is primarily due to the fact that volleyball is a non-contact sport – players rarely contact each other. On the other hand, if we compare volleyball with other non-contact sports (gymnastics, skiing, tennis), then in this case it can be called quite traumatic.

Localization of injuries in volleyball
Specialists conducted a study of injuries when playing volleyball for some rather long period of time. If we neglect the error, we can distinguish a clear trend. Most often, volleyball players injure the ankle, in second place – an injury to the fingers and hands, complete a series of injuries to the knees and shoulders.

that are injured in volleyball

But experts cannot always be trusted: judging by my own experience, I would put knee injury in the first place, shoulder injuries in the second, and the ankle in the third. I consider the knocked out fingers to be a microtrauma, but not very pleasant.

Types of Volleyball Injuries
A volleyball player can get both acute and fatigue injury, which can be caused by constant and regular tissue microtraumas. If we talk about fingers and ankles, then acute injuries predominate (97% and 86% of the total number of injuries, respectively), and fatigue injuries are typical for ankles and knees (they make up 88% of knee injuries and 90% of all shoulder injuries). As for the place and time of the injuries, the games suffered mainly acute injuries (74% of the total number), and both types of injuries during training, although fatigue is still a little leader – 55% of all injuries. If we talk about typical injuries, then for the ankles this is a sprain in the ankle joint, for the fingers – their fractures. Bursitis is also quite common (Bursitis is an inflammation of the synovial bags, which is associated with increased formation and accumulation of fluid in their cavities – exudate).

Volleyball Injury Mechanism
Playing in the immediate vicinity of the net is what is the most intense in volleyball. Injuries occur primarily during attacks and blocking – their number is from 60 to 90% of the total. And at the same time, three players suffer the most – the central blocker, the striker and the player. If we consider the attack and the block separately, then the attack accounts for about one third of the injuries and two thirds – to the block.

When placing blocks, fingers from contact with the ball and ankle from landing after a jump are most often injured. The most common injury during an attack is a shoulder and knee injury.

Sometimes a player, after setting up a block, lands on the center line under the net or even on the enemy’s territory. Theoretically, there is a chance that he will land on the opponent’s leg, injuring him and injuring himself – such injuries, according to statistics of 68% of all ankle injuries and another 19% of such injuries – this is a player injuring his teammate with a double or triple block.

How to avoid injury
First of all, before each workout, you need to warm up well and stretch. It’s better to start with jogging. About 5 minutes will be enough – it all depends on the place of training and what temperature is in the room. Then you can squat up to ten times, do abdominal exercises. If desired, repeat these exercises. Then stretch. How to do the right workout in volleyball, read on the dinamo-vgu.ru website page.
